Leah is Shown the Way
Scene 1 (Leah and Rose enter and sit on chairs)
(Claire and Victoria enter and stand to the side)
Claire: Just look at them. I haven’t liked them since we first started working here.
Victoria: Neither have I. They are always so cheerful and vain. I wish we could get rid of them.
Claire: Without raising the suspicion of their parents? How could this be done?
Victoria: It would be difficult. Maybe we could let the blame rest on us nad run away.
Claire: What a brilliant mind you have, Victoria!
(Claire and Victoria exit)
Rose: Leah, we have discussed everything alive on earth, but what do you think of death?
Leah: Oh Rose, why would you ask such a question? I prefer not to think of such things.
Rose: My sister, do you mean to say that you do not know reality?
Leah: If thinking of unhopeful things is part of reality, yes.
(Leah walks away)
(Rose exits)
Scene 2 (Leah and Rose enter with Claire and Victoria following, Claire and Victoria smile at each other, Claire and Victoria pour the tea)
Leah: Thank you.
Rose: Dear Leah, have you thought any of our earlier conversation?
Leah: No, and I don’t plan to. Now, let us enjoy our tea.
(They both tae a sip and Rose stumbles back)
Leah: Rose, are you alright?!
(Rose coughs and talks in a raspy voice)
Rose: I’m afraid I have been poisoned.
Leah: I must send for help!
Rose: No, it is too late!
Leah: But, Rose, you can’t die!
Rose: I do not fear death, Leah. I know I will go to heaven.
Leah: But you can’t leave me!
Rose: I’d prefer to be with my Savior than anyone else.
(Rose dies and Leah cries very hard)
(Lights go out so Rose and Leah can exit)
Scene 3 (Enter Victoria and Claire)
Victoria: That worked wonderfully!
Claire: Yes, but what of Leah?
Victoria: She’ll probably die of grief.
Claire: We better leave so that we won’t be caught.
(Enter Leah and officer)
Leah: It was they who poisoned my sister!
(The officer takes Claire and Victoria away)
(Leah moves to the front to face audience)
Leah: Death is something I have always avoided. I never wanted to think about where I would go when I die. It was Rose who showed me the truth. I need to think about death. I wonder who the Savior she was talking about is. She must truly love Him if she’d rather be with Him than anybody else. Is death good or bad? Surely the fact that Rose died isn’t good, but she must be happier now. I don’t think the fact of death can be good. I wonder what would have happened if I had died and not Rose. Would I have gone to heaven? I don’t think so. I must find out how to know I will go to heaven. I must find out who this Savior is.
(Lights to out as Leah says the last sentence and then Leah exits)
