The Poetry Contest
Chrissa: Can you wait till the poetry contest?
Gwen: No! What are you reciting?
Ruthie: Hi! What are you doing?
Chrissa: Oh, we were just talking about the poetry contest. What are you reciting?
Ruthie: Dawn by Paul Lawrence Dunbar.
Gwen: I’m reciting The Arrow and the Song by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Chrissa: I’m reciting The Pasture by Robert Frost.
Kit: Hi everyone! I heard that you are reciting The Pasture, Chrissa. That one is my favorite.
Gwen: What are you reciting?
Kit: Oh, Night by Sara Teasdale.
Ruthie: I wish that there were four places so that we could all win at once.
Chrissa: Me too.
Gwen: I bet you are going to win, Chrissa. You recite wonderfully.
Chrissa: Thanks Gwen, but I don’t think so.
Ruthie: When is the contest?
Kit: tomorrow night.
(Gwen: We better get to work then.)
Ruthie: An angel, robed in spotless white, Bent down and kissed the sleeping Night.
Kit: That’s pretty good, Ruthie.
Ruthie: Thanks. How much can you say of yours?
Kit: Stars over snow, And in the west a planet Swinging below a star-
Ruthie: That’s beautiful.
Kit: Thanks.
(Ruthie: We better finish learning these because the contest is in three hours.)
Announcer: First we have Chrissa Maxwell.
(clap)
Chrissa: I’m going out to clean the pasture spring; I’ll only stop to rake the leaves away (And wait to watch the water clear, I may): I sha’n’t be gone long. –You come too.
Announcer: Very good Ms. Maxwell. Next we have Ruthie Smithens.
(clap)
Ruthie: An angel, robed in spotless white, Bent down and kissed the sleeping Night. Night woke to blush; the sprite was gone. Men saw the blush and called it Dawn.
Announcer: Very good Ms. Smithens. Next we have Gwen Thompson.
(clap)
Gwen: I shot an arrow into the air, it fell to earth, I knew not where; For, so swiftly it flew, the sight Could not follow it in its flight.
Announcer: Very good Ms. Thompson. Last but not least we have Kit Kittredge.
(clap)
Kit: Stars over snow, And in the west a planet Swinging below a star- Look for a lovely thing and you will find it, It is not far- It never will be far.
(Announcer: Very good Ms. Kittredge. Now it is time for everyone to vote.)
Gwen: I’m soooooooooo nervous.
(Chrissa: I think we all are.)
Announcer: I have the results. We have a four way tie between Kit Kittredge, Ruthie Smithens, Chrissa Maxwell, and Gwen Thompson.
(Run around, go crazy, and cheer!)
